Measles: A Dangerous and Deadly Threat
May 9, 2025Measles: A Dangerous and Deadly Threat
Measles is not just a childhood illness – it’s a highly contagious and potentially deadly virus that is making a dangerous comeback. At DCMH, we are alarmed by its rapid spread and are urging everyone to take immediate steps to protect themselves and their loved ones. We must act now to stop the spread before more lives are put at risk.
This virus spreads easily through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. The virus can linger in the air for up to 2 hours, ready to infect anyone nearby. A person can spread measles up to 5 days before showing a rash – and they might not even know they are sick. A staggering 90% of unprotected people who are exposed to measles will become infected.
What to Watch For
Symptoms begin 6 to 21 days after exposure. At first, people feel tired, feverish, and have red, watery eyes, a runny nose, and a cough. Then, a red, blotchy rash breaks out, starting on the face and quickly spreading across the body. This is not just a rash – it’s a sign of serious internal illness.
Recovery is Not Guaranteed
While some recover in 1 to 2 weeks, many do not. Complications can be devastating. Measles can cause pneumonia, brain swelling, permanent brain damage, and death. Every year, thousands of people – mostly children – suffer permanent consequences or lose their lives.
1 in 4 people with measles will need to be hospitalized. 1 to 3 out of every 1,000 infected people will die. Even more will suffer lasting harm. Unvaccinated children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable.
There Is No Cure
There is no antiviral medication that can cure measles. Treatment is limited to Tylenol, fluids, and care for complications. By the time treatment begins, the virus may have already caused permanent damage.
Vaccination Saves Lives
The MMR vaccine is the only effective defense. It is safe, proven, and highly effective. It has saved millions of lives around the world. The idea that the vaccine causes autism has been completely debunked – there is no scientific evidence to support it. Without vaccination, you are risking serious illness, hospitalization, or death – for yourself or your child.
Measles Kills. Vaccinate Now.
Measles is back – and it’s deadly. It spreads through the air and infects 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people. You can catch it just by being in the same room hours later.
This isn’t just a rash. Measles can cause brain damage, pneumonia, and death. 1 in 4 people are hospitalized.
There’s no cure. But the MMR vaccine protects you. It’s safe. It works. It saves lives.
